Ford Crankshaft”
For years, I thought a compressor and the turbocharger or turbo were the same. Just different names for various automotive manufacturers, no? In fact, it's not quite true.
A turbocharger is really a form of compressor. There is a gas compressor used for induction forced into a combustion engine internet (Motors cars, for example). The purpose of a turbo is to create more energy by increasing the density air entering the engine. The turbocharger is a compressor powered by a turbine which is driven by the engine exhaust. This is different a compressor which is powered by a mechanical drive.
Turbocharged diesel engines is very common, because they adapt very well to turbocharging. A specific power and engine power to weight ratio can be greatly enhanced by a turbocharger. Otherwise, statistics are poor in turbocharged diesel engines.
Turbochargers used in gasoline engines for cars and motor performance diesel for transport. Small cars actually benefit a turbo and there is not much room to install a big engine. Some manufacturers turbo cars produced for many years as Volvo, Saab, Audi, Volkswagen and Subaru. Chrysler and Buick turbocharged engines developed in the 70 and 80.
A compressor air compressor used for forced induction of an internal combustion engine. The compressors are belt drive mechanical gears, a tree or a chain connected to the engine crankshaft. Superchargers turbine driven by gas turbochargers. The compressor increases the engine power to provide more oxygen for combustion. The first turbo car introduced by Mercedes in 1921. Compressors are widely used by racing cars and production, luxury cars and high performance.
There are three different types of compressors used in industry automotive turbochargers are driven centrifugal compressor exhaust, centrifugal, they are driven by the engine through the transmission belt and the displacement pumps. superchargers, in many applications, turbochargers are less effective, but for dragsters and vehicles used in tractor pulling contests these compressors are very common engine response and power.
The economy and engine power are better than the turbo-compressors. But the main advantage of a supercharger is better throttle response and capacity to achieve the full brunt of the pressure instantly.
For the two compressors and turbochargers, and an important part of the design is to maintain the air entering the engine cool. compression air temperature increases and it is common to use a cooler to reduce the air temperature and the pump motor.
